Can multiple unrelated and platonic people have guardianship over a child?

So if I was eligible to adopt a child and my friend was eligible to adopt a child, could we adopt a child together even if we are not romantically together or legally married? Like if we each wanted to raise a child but we didn’t want to raise a child all on our own and we were like “hey, what if we raised a child together?” that way we are not single parents struggling with single parent responsibilities. would we be allowed to adopt a child and have my name as one parent and my friend’s name as the other parent? And we would live together and share household responsibilities the same as if we were married or romantically together, but we would just be platonic best friends who raise our child together.
Also would our genders make any difference in this? Like if my friend is female and I am female vs. if my friend is male and I am female. Would that make a difference in the eyes of the law?
