Was it common for some people to have no friends back then, and be alright with it?

Today people mostly communicate through social media and don’t care to interact with their friends in real life. A lot of people (like me) just don’t have any friends and experience a lot of social pressure through social media to do so. Friendships online have just gotten so weird and stressful. How did you guys maintain and make friendships? Did you have a lot of friends? Did you talk to them constantly? Were there some people who just didn’t have friends and it felt alright not to?
