How do you tell whether ADHD medication is causing autism-like symptoms or making existing ones more noticeable?

💁‍♀️ seeking advice / support / information

Hey everyone! I somehow actually managed to find a doctor who is willing to do both a general assessment and an autism assessment with me.

I’m already taking ADHD medication (Elvanse), but my previous doctor never did an ECG or blood work. I brought this up and asked to get it checked, since I know ADHD medication can potentially cause cardiovascular issues.

Long story short: my blood pressure and heart rate are too high. The doctor recommended tapering off my current medication and then trying a different one under close medical supervision.
He also told me that too high a dose of ADHD medication can cause symptoms that can look similar to autism, and because of that, he doesn’t want to continue with the autism assessment until my medication has been adjusted.
Which I can understand, but it’s still frustrating.

When I asked him whether the autism assessment would even make sense afterwards if he thinks the symptoms could be caused by the medication, he didn’t really want to give me a clear answer.

And this is where I’m struggling: I’ve only really started paying close attention to all of these things since I started taking Elvanse and began seriously considering autism. So I genuinely don’t know how much of this was already there before and how much might actually be new.

People often say that ADHD medication can “make symptoms more noticeable” or “amplify existing symptoms”, but how am I supposed to know whether something was already there if I wasn’t consciously paying attention to it before? 😭
So I wanted to ask:

TL;DR:

Has anyone experienced something similar? Did changing or lowering your ADHD medication eventually make the autism-like symptoms go away? Or did you adjust your medication and later find out that the symptoms were actually part of autism after all?

I’m mostly looking for people who have actually been through this themselves, because I’m trying to figure out how other people were able to distinguish between the two.
