Fighting, pls help

I cannot get my head around the fighting at all, I'm not normally a fighting game person but I loved GK1 so I've picked up 2 but I'm really struggling.

Everything else is okay, but could someone explain fighting to me like I'm 5? I've got the barricades and the mercenaries ready to go.
