2017 F-150 2.7 EcoBoost — P1015/P1016 after replacing wastegate vacuum sensor. Solenoid next?

I’m looking for input from anyone familiar with the 2015–2017 2.7 EcoBoost vacuum-operated wastegate system, especially anyone who has dealt with P1015/P1016.

2017 F-150 2.7 EcoBoost, ~115k miles. Original symptoms were a CEL, sluggish acceleration, and delayed/inconsistent turbo response.

I first took it to a reputable independent shop. Their lead tech spent most of the day diagnosing it. They found and corrected a pinched wastegate vacuum hose, which helped slightly, but the problem remained. Ultimately they couldn’t confidently determine whether the fault was the wastegate control solenoid or the larger vacuum/hose system, so they recommended Ford diagnose it rather than start throwing parts at it.

Ford then diagnosed it and told me the wastegate vacuum/pressure sensor — BB5Z-9F479-C / Motorcraft CX2718 — was bad. Because of what the previous mechanic had told me, I specifically asked the advisor something along the lines of:

“Your testing actually isolated the sensor itself, correct? Not the solenoid or the rest of the vacuum system?”

I was told yes.

I bought the exact OEM sensor and installed it myself. Installation looks correct: electrical connector locked, hose fully seated, spring clamp back in position, sensor bolted down, no obvious damaged hoses or audible vacuum leaks.

I then cleared the codes with an OBD scanner and drove the truck. Initially it seemed noticeably more responsive, although that may have been some confirmation bias.

Unfortunately, the fault returned. CEL is back on and I’m seeing:

  • P1015 — Wastegate Control Pressure Lower Than Expected
  • P1016 — Wastegate Control Pressure Higher Than Expected
  • P1015(00)
  • P1016(00)

Ford has agreed to re-diagnose it in a few days at no additional diagnostic charge.

In the meantime, I’m considering replacing the wastegate control solenoid myself since the current Ford replacement, JT4Z-9E882-A (supersedes FL3Z-9E882-B), is only around $50–60. The expensive hose/vacuum assembly appears to be FL3Z-9S468-B, which I obviously don’t want to replace without proving it’s bad.

My question: for anyone who has actually diagnosed this system or had this exact issue, what ultimately fixed your P1015/P1016?

Would you suspect:

  • intermittent/sticking wastegate solenoid,
  • vacuum leak/restriction in the hose assembly,
  • vacuum supply/pump issue,
  • wastegate actuator problem,
  • or something else?

I’m trying to avoid blindly replacing parts, but I’m also comfortable doing the repair myself once I know what actually needs replacing. Any firsthand experience or Ford-specific diagnostic advice would be appreciated.
