Looking for advice/opportunities for someone getting back into welding in Michigan

Discussion 🗣️

Hey everyone! I’m 22 and currently getting everything set up to go back to Lansing Community College (LCC) for their Welding Technology certificate. I actually attended LCC a few years ago and completed some of the welding coursework, so I do have some previous hands-on experience, but I’ve been away from school and welding for a few years.
I’m planning to officially start back up around October and work toward getting my welding certificate. Since it will probably take me around a year to finish just with working a full time job and school, I’d really like to find a way to get some additional hands-on experience in the welding field while I’m going through school.
For anyone in Michigan who works in welding or fabrication, what kinds of entry-level jobs would you recommend for someone in my position? I’d definitely be open to welding helper, fabrication, shop, production, or other positions where I could learn and get more experience while working toward my certificate.
I’d also really appreciate hearing from anyone who started welding at a younger age. What do you wish you knew when you were first getting into the trade? Are there particular types of shops, jobs, certifications, or skills you’d recommend focusing on early?
I’m still figuring out exactly what direction I want to take with welding, so I’d appreciate any advice, experiences, or recommendations you’re willing to share. Thanks!
