denied lvad surgery, said it could be a possibility later
my dad has severe heart failure, he has had four stents and valve repair, heart is too weak for a bypass, they finally recommended lvad. he started getting worse again a few months ago and went to the hospital to drain fluid buildup. they sent him home with a permanent IV dobutamine. they were acting like he was a candidate for lvad - nurses coming in and telling him all about it, letting him hold the batteries, meeting with a surgeon who was talking all about timeline, recovery, etc. the surgeon said we may do the surgery as early as next week. my dad had definitely gotten weaker and frailer since the beginning of august - his ef went from 35% in june to 15/20 % in august. they met as a team and called us today and said they decided he was not a candidate at this time - too frail too risky for surgery. they said get into cardiac rehab ASAP, up the dobutamine drip, and focus on nutrition. he’s barely been eating at all. then they said they can revisit the lvad surgery. has this happened to anyone else? can he actually regain his strength or should we give up hope and prepare for the worst? i think my dad is depressed, he’s not eating much. my mom and i are scared and really want him to be able to get this surgery. it really seemed like he would be able to
