How do you guys rate EMG pickups?

Was listening to Rick Beato's Les Claypool interview and he was stanning EMG pickups. I have a squier pbass with whatever fridge magnet pickups they come with and idk its been like a year and ive never got a tone I like out of them. I cannot afford a good bass, but I can afford like £120 pickup set and a few bucks in labour to put them on. I realise its kind of like putting dayton rims on a tercel, but you know whatever, sometimes you gotta dance with the one that brung ya.

If you think EMG are overpriced for what they are, what would you recommend? At the moment just looking to replace the splits, since the long one near the bridge is actually kinda okay and i dont have it involved too much.
