Climbing roses need constant tying in
I have some absolutely beautiful New Dawn roses that have been in the ground about 3 years. They are so stunning and I love them to bits. However, I have found that they need somewhat constant tying in during the growing season as they grow so quickly - like every week! I left for a 2 week holiday in September and between the fall weather and the hard cutting back I gave them before I left, I thought they would behave. Well, they didn’t! I just got home and they became like octopuses (octopi?) with so many new canes growing every which way, some are even 3-4’ long. All in just 2 weeks! It may sound silly but has anyone found a method to “tame” this rose or is this just the nature of New Dawn and climbers in general? I have read somewhere that you can”sculpt” a vigorous climber like New Dawn and cut back stems to the base quite severely for a good result. Any tips or similar stories to share?
