A 'show-off' driver had been 'drifting and skidding' around Sutton Coldfield town centre when he collided into and killed a young woman walking along the pavement.

Natasha Thorp was walking arm in arm with best friend Cerys Cartwright along Brassington Avenue just before midnight on August 22 last year, having enjoyed a 'perfect' night out up until that point.

But then Saleh Mahmoud Taha Hassan lost control of his Toyota Corolla and ploughed into them.

He got out and said his own life 'was over'. But in reality he had ended the life of Ms Thorp, a 21-year-old university student described as a 'ray of sunshine'. He had also hurt Ms Cartwright, also 21, who suffered serious injuries including a broken foot.

A group who witnessed the collision immediately came over and helped the victims, while one person went straight for Hassan and punched him repeatedly before police arrived.

The 20-year-old, of Viscount Road, Sutton Coldfield, had only passed his test less than two months earlier and was not insured to drive that night, despite having made Uber Eats deliveries earlier that evening.

At Birmingham Crown Court today (Friday, September 18), he was jailed for nine years and four months as well as banned from driving for 12 years and eight months.

Hassan had previously pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving, causing serious injury by dangerous driving and causing death by driving while uninsured.
