Shipbuilding question

I am pretty sure there is no way to do this when shipbuilding… I have a big ship that I want to add to. Usually I find ways to just bolt stuff on, but it would be really handy to just split the ship and separate it in two parts and fill in with some extra stuff - energy generators, compute, cargo, etc. As near as I can tell there is no way to do this - am I right?
