The Surrey Mesh Network is officially live! 🌐 Disconnected from the big telecom, join our community-built, decentralized network (Meshcore)

General Discussion

Hi everyone!

I’m excited to announce that we are officially building out a Meshcore network right here in Surrey!

If you haven't heard of it before, Meshcore is a community-built digital mesh network that allows us to send messages, share data, and stay connected entirely independent of traditional internet service providers or cell towers. Think of it like a glorified digital walkie-talkie for your phone, running on its own local radio frequencies.

## πŸ—ΊοΈ How it Works (Check out the diagram attached!)

Instead of relying on one massive central cell tower, a mesh network is powered by everyday citizens like you and me.

Personally, I had no signals indoors because it's a very weak signal that drops significantly when going through a single wall. I had to put a solar repeater one on my roof to get a good connection to the network, and now I have a strong signal indoors. Not only that, my neighbors for about two blocks around me benefits from my router on my roof.

* The Nodes: Each network point is a tiny, low-power node consisting of a microcontroller board, a LoRa radio chip, an antenna, and a battery. They can easily be placed on a roof, balcony, or window.

* Automatic Discovery: As soon as a node is powered on, it automatically scans for and discovers other nearby nodes in the neighborhood.

* Data Hopping: When you send a message, it doesn't go to a corporate server. Instead, it "hops" securely from node to node across Surrey until it reaches its destination.

## πŸš€ Why should you care?

* 100% Decentralized: No single point of failure. Even if the main power grid or internet goes down during a storm, our local mesh stays up.

* Privacy First: The network is community-owned, encrypted, and open-source.

* Power to the People: The more people who set up a node, the stronger, wider, and faster our local network becomes.

## πŸ› οΈ How to get involved

We are looking for early adopters, tech enthusiasts, or anyone interested in resilient community infrastructure to help us expand our coverage map across Surrey.

If you want to set up a node, check your current coverage, or just chat with other local builders across the country, check out Meshcore Canada. You can find getting-started guides, check out the live network map, or hop into the national community chat via the MeshCore Canada Discord. [1, 2]

Let's build a truly connected Surrey together!
