Rant

Just wanted to rant. I’m visibly recessed with some functional issues like TMD and a slight anterior open bite, deviated midline, lip incompetence. I guess looking recessed as an Asian female tends to give off a neotenous look (round face, chubby cheeks) that some find “cute”.

I saw 4 surgeons for opinions. 2 were Asian, 2 were non-Asian. The 2 Asian surgeons agreed that I was recessed and could benefit from jaw surgery with CCW and impaction.

The 2 non-Asian surgeons both said something along the lines of how they think I look cute. One talked about how CCW would make me look “manly” and he would actually prefer CW for a more feminine look. Which tf, I’m already recessed?? The other just kept yapping about how in his opinion he doesn’t think I need it because I have nice features.

Aesthetics are obviously a concern because this is a major operation cutting up the skull, but not the only concern. Just thought how it was weird and frustrating those two phrased my recession as cute and ignored my concerns about improving the functional issues. I am a woman in my 30s, so I also thought that was infantilizing.
