illustration job market?
hi! for those who work as an illustrator in any capacity (would be curious to hear what your job is, though!) especially those with degrees, what do you think of the current job market for illustrators? i have done some looking around online but am really interested in input from people actively in the field.
for some context and background, i am currently an interior design junior, and I am really just not feeling it. I am considering switching my major to illustration (on a track w/ focus on art for games and animation) in the winter as that’s my last chance before I start having wasted credits. but i am a little worried about the job market because when i was first deciding my major, my profs who were illustrators by trade and education told me that while they think i had the skill, I would likely be self employed and doing contract jobs forever which turned me away from it.
insane props to people who have it in them to be self employed, but I know that I don’t.
my ideal job would be environmental design in games and/or animation, so extra curious about how that looks, but i think i would be happy in any illustration position.
