Dad in hospital with COPD, and they’ve told him he has lung cancer. What next? Also he’s abroad.
My dad is 65 and has lived in northern Cyprus for a few years now. We pretty much knew he had copd but it wasn’t confirmed until now. We are from the uk originally.
Early this week he had a severe episode of breathlessness (understatement) and was hospitalised and put on oxygen. They’ve done a CT scan and said, he has very severe late stage COPD with a lesion on the lung. He’s called me back today and says the doctor has given it to him straight, that one of his lungs is clearly cancerous. They can’t do a biopsy because his blood oxygen is so low, and they can’t transfer him to the hospital in the capital city because he is too weak at the moment. When asked how long he has, they said “maybe a month, maybe six”.
Can they really make this sort of assessment without doing more investigations? It seems drastic considering they haven’t even done a PET scan yet. Can anyone give me any insight?
What I really want to do is get him back to the uk to be assessed, my dad does not have private healthcare in northern Cyprus and I don’t know how well funded their state healthcare is. Not only to assess him, but if he is going to die, he needs to be at home. He wants this too but he is not sure whether he can make the flight in his current state or anytime at all. What they’ve told my dad doesn’t involve any treatment options as of yet and it sounds to me like he’s going to give up. I don’t want that to happen. But I also don’t want to put him through unnecessary stress if he is coming to the end of his life.
Any advice is appreciated.
