Chem 1a textbook reading

Can anyone who's taken Chem 1a give me advice? I am terrible with reading textbooks. Is it totally necessary, or will taking notes on lecture videos in advance and doing all the book problems/ALEKS be enough to do well? For context, I have Joseph!

Also, any other tips are really appreciated :)
