AITA for separating myself from a creepy and manipulative friend who everyone else is still friends with
I (16f) was in a friend group with this guy, who we’ll just call John. We met at a local community theatre camp. He had been giving me the ick for a year or so at this point.
He’d made offhand comments before, but I’d brushed them off as weird quirks. For example, cornering my afab friend and teasing her about sharing a dressing room. For important context, he says he’s gay. I would protest.
Later that year (2024) he offhandedly called me a plus size woman. I wear a medium. I considered these oversights. I called him fairly regularly throughout the school year, and I was still friends when we came back to camp the next year.
He got weirder. He would make comments about me and my other girl friends portraying the characters we were playing or just portraying ourselves as “too sexy” not as a joke. He was always very sensitive when we’d tease him in the exact same way. He could dish it out but he could NEVER take it.
After camp ended in late July, me, John, and other friends would call on a regular basis. I’ll call these other friends Felix, Genny, and Allie. Felix and John had been dating briefly, then they broke up after John had lied about aspects of their relationship multiple times. John said they made out untold times, when they’d actually kissed once. It was just weird things like that.
I kept talking to John, though. I pushed things to the side. Until he said a REALLY weird thing to Genny, who was three years younger than him. She was GOING INTO seventh grade, he was going into tenth.
I wasn’t there directly, but they were on call and playing Roblox. He asked her a would you rather question, then he asked if she had gotten her period. She was hesitant, but said yes. Then he asked if she had ever had an orgasm. Our entire friend group was disgusted.
Then, we all hung out the day before school started. I had been dating a girl (who apparently was cheating on me for the last month and a half of our relationship) for a little over a year. We were all in a big group and he was purposefully excluding himself, then cried about feeling excluded. I was the only one who didn’t comfort him.
I had been trying to keep my distance this whole time, just more subtly than later. After we walked some of our friends home, and one went to a class she had, it was only me, Genny, and John. Earlier, I had heard him make a Jewish joke along the lines of “it’s so hard to be Jewish”. I asked what he meant, and he said “I’m just joking about people who were complaining about manageable problems.”
This was after me and Genny had shared our problems with eating disorders and $H in the past. We’re both clean now!
When it was just us three left, I asked what he meant about that joke. He said it wasn’t about me, but I kept asking. Also, he’s not Jewish. Me and Genny are, as well as Felix. At some point during confronting him, which had turned into a screaming match, he said me and Genny were rich so he didn’t understand how we had so many problems.
