Should I go for cybersecurity?
Hi there, I’m (37F) starting school next month. I was thinking of doing cybersecurity but I am so ambivalent and need help with the truth of this career. The degree would be BS Computer Programming with a major in Cybersecurity. Now, many friends in tech have told me to just go for it but I don’t trust that they’re unbiased. They just want to be encouraging which is nice, but I need facts. I read somewhere in this sub that “unless you’re a savant”, you’ll be stuck doing desk work indefinitely, which sucks. I also see people getting laid off but also people being over employed?? Which one is it?? Is the job market super bad for all tech? Is AI going to make this career obsolete? Or is it true that it’s still employable but with a focus on AI? It seems the entry level barrier is high, so how do people get a job after graduating? I also don’t have the funds to go to a good or reputable school so I found one that fits my humble budget and current situation. Does this degree sound good enough to graduate with or does it have to be a BS in Cybersecurity? Also while I’m doing schooling, what steps should I simultaneously take to make my chances of being hired higher upon graduation?
