Apparently exploitative teen door-to-door sales becomes ministry if you pray first.
Things i hate about youth rush:
- Nothing like telling a group of teenagers that low book sales might mean they need to “work on their relationship with God." Because obviously a stranger not buying a $20 religious health book is a personal spiritual failure...not, you know, capitalism, timing, or the fact that people do not enjoy being door-knocked.
- Meanwhile, the some students breaking “Rule Number 9” could be top sellers. So apparently God was blessing the horny colporteurs’ numbers while the low selling obedient kids got lectures about their prayer lives. LMAO.
- They would not technically force early-morning devotions, but there was definitely a spiritual caste system: wake up at dawn, perform discipline, look holy, and you were seen as more mature, more committed, more “close to God.”
- Then there were quotas, kids crying over poor sales, top-seller vans, and this unspoken belief that selling more books meant you were somehow spiritually superior.
- “Every soul matters,” allegedly unless you were not selling enough souls, in which case suddenly your character was the problem.
- My personal favorite: I was two minutes late to training, so leadership made about fifteen teenagers run laps for thirty minutes in 100-degree Southern California heat because 2 min x 15 students = 30 minutes wasted. I had just gotten my period and needed to go and change and he didnt even let me explain myself without singling me out in front of everyone. How tf am i supposed to bring up my period to patriarchal conservatives in front of everyone? not humiliating at all.
- And safety? Barely. We were sent into unfamiliar and sometimes sketchy neighborhoods as minors, with “every soul” used as the answer to any fear or hesitation.
But sure. Totally not exploitative. Just a wholesome youth ministry where teenagers sell books door-to-door in gruesome weather, getting ranked by performance, and are told their sales numbers reflect their spiritual worth.
