Does Android resample my music?

Question

Usually, yes, unless your player talks to the DAC directly.

Android sends every app's audio through one shared mixer, at one rate the phone picks. Google's docs use 48 kHz as the example, and on USB it can run higher. Unless that rate is 44.1, every CD rip gets converted, and nothing on screen says so.

Two ways to check yours:

  1. Play a 44.1 kHz file and read your DAC's rate light or display, if it has one.
  2. If it doesn't, turn on Wireless debugging (Android 11+, since the DAC's in the port), connect adb, play the file, and run `adb shell dumpsys media.audio_flinger`. In the block whose "Output devices" line says USB, "Sample rate" is the mixer's rate.

Full breakdown with the exceptions is here: https://meringo.app/does-android-resample/

(I build Meringo, which drives the DAC itself. UAPP does too. So I'm biased.)

What does yours read?
