The Earthly Branch Chou(丑)-the Ox, is the second sign of the Chinese zodiac.

Chou(丑) hour is from 1:00 to 3:00 a.m.
This is the coldest, quietest, and most trying hour of the day.
The night is still deep, the cold still heavy; all things are asleep, and the world waits for light in silence.

But this is where Eastern wisdom is at its most profound and grounded: The coldest soil protects the earliest roots.

When yin reaches its extreme, yang must arise; when stillness reaches its extreme, movement begins.

While everyone is resting, a new cycle of growth has already quietly taken root deep in the earth.

This is the temperament of “Chou(丑)”:

It does not rush to be first or make noise, yet it is the steadiest, the thickest, the most capable of bearing weight.

Its corresponding zodiac animal is the Ox, not because it is powerful, but because it is the most grounded and resilient, able to hold fast to the shifts of vital energy within frozen soil. Slow, yet every step takes root; silent, yet endlessly alive.

Chou(丑) belongs to Earth: it is bearing, kindness, trustworthiness, and steadfastness. It represents accumulation, cultivation, foundation, transformation, and continuity.

All bowing of the head is for the sake of moving forward more steadily. All silence is quietly nurturing the power to break through the soil.

This is the life of Chou(丑):

In the coldest place, it guards the veins of the earth; in the soundless place, it cultivates all things.

If you were born in 1961, 1973, 1985, 1997, 2009, or 2021 — a Year of the Ox — does any of this feel familiar to you?

Are you naturally steady, grounded, patient, and resilient? Do you tend to move at your own pace, quietly building something solid over time? Or do you feel completely different?

I’d love to hear how Ox-year people see themselves. 🐂
