WIBTAH if I refuse to go to the gym with my friends.
I haven't done it yet, cause I don't know if itd be a bad thing to do and I'm genuinely looking for advice.
I started college about an year ago. I figured most of the things out on my own. The hardest was getting used to a new gym (I have horrible social anxiety) but eventually I got used to it. I've built a lot of confidence now, and kinda look forward to going there.
This semester, a few friends of mine decided to join as well. They had never been to the gym and needed my help which I was happy to offer. Being a beginner in a new gym is scary so I agreed. But the problem is, I feel like they rely on me too much now.
I thought, I'd help then figure stuff out initially then we'd do our own thing.
Our gym is located very close to campus and there are gym instructors there specifically to help you out, free of cost. I tell them to ask those guys for help if needed.
But they still ask me to accompany them to some equipment cause "too many people are standing around", ask me to check their form and ask me every second what they should do next despite doing the same routine for weeks.
I have a routine tailored for myself. They copy it. I have told them multiple times that they should start doing research on exercises instead of asking me what exercises they should do. They shouldn't copy my routine since we are at different levels of fitness and have different goals. Everyday when we leave for the gym they ask me "what we have planned for the day" and i have to tell them the routine. Once i skipped the gym cause of injury, two of the didnt't go and the one that did, kept asking me what she should do that day.
Worst is when they say stuff like "Why aren't we doing glute bridges on leg day when people do it? Isn't it something you have to do" or stuff like "I saw xyz youtuber do this exercise on leg day, so why don't we."
Its not that we can't, its just I dont. I'm not restricting you from doing those so why keep asking me?
Not to mention the fact, they take at least half an hour extra in breaks between sets, chatting and joking around.
I miss when I used to go to the gym alone. I'd be done with most of my excercises in 50 minutes and spend another 20 on cardio. Gym is my therapy. Spending that 1-1.5 hours there relaxes me.
What irks me even more is when they joke about how its almost like they have a "boyfriend" who holds the door open for them, helps them out. etc. Im a girl. Im not your "boyfriend"
And its not just inside the gym they rely on me, its also outside. I'm a very organised person. I'm super independent. I have never asked anyone for help so maybe that is why it annoys me when people ask me for it. But I still feel like they treat me like a babysitter even though I'm there age.
If they're getting bored, they'll come to my room. If they need notes, they'll take mine. If they are going to miss breakfast, they want me to get them something. Too shy to talk to a waiter? They'll ask me. Like every time they have a problem, they come to me. I don't mind helping people but I hate when they rely on me and stop using their own brains.
I know its gym etiquette to help beginners but I don't know if it extends to my case. I want my gym sessions back. This may be super selfish so I'm not sure what to do. WIBTAH?
