What is the benefit of non-practicing registration versus letting it expire?

Could someone explain the benefit of opting for non-practicing registration rather than just letting my registration lapse, in Victoria?

I'm studying and not currently teaching, and not sure when/if I'll return. I have full registration.

If I let it expire and want to return to full registration later, is the process more difficult, like starting back at provisional?

Any clarification would be very much appreciated!
