This post is for Neuroanatomy Nerd and computer sci Nerd
**IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service): White matter and supporting tissue**
- **White matter (networking):** Myelinated axon bundles act as the high-speed cabling between data centers, connecting cortical regions to each other and to deeper structures. Myelin works like insulation on a cable, boosting signal speed and reducing loss.
- **Glial cells (hardware maintenance):** Astrocytes, oligodendrocytes, and microglia keep the servers running by supplying nutrients, building myelin, clearing debris, and pruning unused synapses, much like a data center's operations crew.
- **Blood supply and blood-brain barrier (power and firewall):** Cerebral blood vessels deliver the constant power (glucose and oxygen), while the blood-brain barrier filters what gets in, acting as a physical-layer firewall.
- **Neurons as raw compute:** The cortex's billions of neurons can be seen as the underlying processing capacity that all higher services run on.
**PaaS (Platform as a Service): Thalamus, basal ganglia, brainstem**
- **Thalamus (API gateway):** Nearly all sensory input except smell passes through it, where it is filtered, prioritized, and routed to the right cortical area, the same role an API gateway plays between clients and services.
- **Basal ganglia (scheduler and permission layer):** They decide which actions and habits get executed and which are suppressed, working like a job scheduler that approves or blocks processes and automates repeated routines.
- **Brainstem (operating system kernel):** It runs essential background processes such as breathing, heart rate, sleep and wake cycles, and reflexes, which keep the platform alive whether or not any application is active.
- **Cerebellum (runtime optimizer):** It fine-tunes timing and coordination for movement, similar to a runtime environment that optimizes performance for applications built on top of it.
**SaaS (Software as a Service): Cerebral cortex**
- **Prefrontal cortex (executive application):** It handles planning, decision-making, critical thinking, and self-control, the user-facing application that manages everything else.
- **Language areas, Broca's and Wernicke's (communication software):** These produce and understand speech and writing, functioning like the language and messaging apps of the system.
- **Visual, auditory, and sensory cortices (media software):** They turn raw signals into sight, sound, and touch, comparable to rendering and media processing apps.
- **Association cortex (creative suite):** Areas that link memory, sensation, and meaning support imagination, abstraction, and creativity, the most advanced software the machine runs.
- **Hippocampus with the cortex (storage service):** The hippocampus writes new memories and gradually transfers them to the cortex for long-term storage, like a sync service moving data from cache to cloud storage.
One small factual note for your prose: white matter signals are fast but not light speed. The quickest myelinated fibers carry signals at about 120 meters per second, so "high-speed" or "near-instant" would be more accurate than "light speed."
