Disclaimer upfront: I'm building a study tool, and I'll mention it at the end. But the first part is the thing I actually wanted to share, because I think it's useful whether you ever try what I'm building or not.

The pattern I kept seeing (in myself, and in basically every student I talked to): you do the work. You watch the lectures, sometimes at 2x to catch up. It all makes sense while you're watching. Then you sit down with a question and there's just... nothing.

What I eventually realised is that most of the time the problem isn't the chapter you're stuck on. It's a gap from earlier that never got fixed. You struggle with rolling motion, but the real issue is torque, and the real issue behind that is that vectors never fully clicked. A lecture made for thousands of people at once can't notice that. It just moves on, and the next chapter gets built on top of the gap.

A few things that genuinely helped, no tool needed:

\- When you're stuck, go backwards, not sideways. Don't rewatch the same lecture. Ask "what does this depend on?" and test yourself on that.

\- Predict before you watch. Guess the answer or the next step first. Being wrong is where the learning actually happens. Passive watching skips that.

\- Check your method, not just your answer. Getting the right answer with the wrong reasoning is a trap that shows up later.

\- Revise right before you'd forget, not on a fixed schedule. Spaced repetition is boring advice because it works.

What I'm building (Cogitute) basically tries to automate those four things. A short diagnostic check finds where the gap actually is. Lessons make you predict and play with the idea rather than just watch. You can snap a photo of your working and it tells you which step went wrong. And you don't move on until you've actually understood. Right now it covers school science and maths (class 6–12, for Indian board and entrance exams), in English and Hindi.

It's pre-launch, with a waitlist at [cogitute.com](http://cogitute.com) if you're curious. I'm mostly posting because I'd honestly like to hear from people here:

What's the thing that actually made a subject click for you when lectures didn't?

I spent a year figuring out why "I watched every lecture" and "I blanked on the test" keep happening together
