Why does Facebook sometimes show me posts from pages I never followed?

I understand that Facebook recommends content, but sometimes my feed has posts from pages I've never interacted with or even heard of before.

Is there a specific setting that controls how much recommended content appears in the feed, or is this something Facebook decides automatically?
