Disappointed that my heeler/lab mix didn't seem to enjoy our camping trip.

Behavior

TL;DR: Heeler mix spent entire camping trip (other than hiking outings) just straining against her tie-out and trying to get back to the car. We want to help her enjoy camping more, for all of our sakes. Any advice from people whose dogs enjoy overnight camping trips?

Wondering if anyone here has any advice or similar experience to get their dog to enjoy camping.

My husband and I adopted a one-year-old Heeler/Lab (and some other stuff) mix about 9 months ago, so she is coming up on her 2nd birthday. She is overall a great dog. Very submissive, loves walks, frisbee, car rides, learning new tricks, meeting both people and dogs (although dog parks scare her) and is very lovey and cuddly. Sucks at recall but we are working, lol. (She's never off leash in public.)

We thought all of this would fit in great with our goals of having a "camp dog" and brought her on her first camping trip this weekend. Obviously I cannot read her mind, but she did not seem to enjoy herself as I had imagined :(

We were there for two nights, and the only time she seemed her happy/normal self was during hikes. Unfortunately, it ended up being much hotter than was predicted a couple weeks ago, so this was mostly limited to the morning and evenings. The rest of the time, when we were trying to just hang around at the campsite, she did nothing but strain against her tie out, whine, and try to get in the car. Just to clarify, she was on a 20-ft tie out and had access to shade, water, where we were sitting, the tent if she wanted to go in (although it was very hot inside during the day), several toys and chews from home, and plenty to sniff at around the campsite. However she would go (into the sun) to the end of her rope and just strain against it, panting wildly, either in the direction of the car or the direction we walked into the camp from. It was hot (90s) but the shade was bearable and not anything different than what she's experienced in our backyard and local parks all summer.

She would barely even acknowledge us, didn't want treats or to play like she usually does, didn't listen to commands... she was like a totally different dog and was just dead-set on getting back into the car. Ironically, once we settled down for the night in the tent she passed out and was fine all night. Then in the morning the straining/restlessness would begin again. We have two more camping trips planned for October and November, one being five nights!!! So we would really like to ensure a better time for all of us.

Any advice or assessment of what is going on in her mind?
