Overtime expectations at new job. What should I do?
Hi all,
I started a new job in May of this year. I was initially hired for a position paying $92K. After three months, I was promoted to a position paying $110K. There are a lot of learning opportunities, which I really appreciate.
The main problem I have is the work culture. The hourly workers regularly work 10–12+ hour shifts. Many workers work 13 days straight, and this seems to be the social norm there. Salaried workers are also expected to come in every other weekend to provide “moral support.”
Toward the end of the month, workers come in for their regular hours and then stay until almost midnight—sometimes until 10 PM, 11 PM, or even 12 AM—to meet their numbers.
So far, I have not been asked to work overtime. I have been intentionally avoiding being seen as too available because I don't want to establish an expectation that I am willing to work these kinds of hours. The company has a high turnover rate and seems to rely heavily on overtime to compensate for poor planning and inefficiency.
I’m afraid to leave this job because I’m happy with the salary and the opportunities to learn, and I’m worried that I might not find another opportunity like this.
What would you do in my situation?
