Learning his place part 5

Ethan woke before Maya. The cage was already warm against him, a steady, locked weight that no longer lived in this house. He stayed still and listened to her breathe until she rolled toward him and laid her hand on his hip.

“Morning,” she said. Her fingers rested over the metal like it belonged there.

Ethan got out of bed . She didn’t dress him beyond the same soft black underwear from the night before. She kissed the side of his neck, brief and fond, and sent him to make coffee.

They were at the kitchen table when her phone rang. She put it on speaker and set it between them.

Marcus didn’t waste time.

“Is he there?”

“Yes,” Maya said. “Across from me. Locked. Waiting.”

“Good.” Marcus’s voice was even. Calm. Like he was used to being listened to. “Then we do this now so there’s no confusion later.”

Maya looked at Ethan and nodded once. Stay.

Marcus went on.

“The key stays with me. That’s not a discussion. Maya, you don’t ask for it back. You don’t offer him hope about it. You run him. I run the arrangement. If I want him, you bring him. If I want him quiet, he’s quiet. If I want him on his knees when I walk in, that’s how I find him.”

“Understood,” Maya said. No hesitation.

Ethan felt his face go hot. He kept his hands on his thighs.

Marcus’s tone didn’t change. “Ethan. You’re listening.”

“Yes, Marcus.”

“You don’t negotiate with her about the cage. You don’t ask her to text me for you. You speak when one of us tells you to speak. At home you belong to Maya. When I want you, you belong to both of us. You stay locked. You stay polite. You thank me when I tell you to thank me. Clear?”

Ethan had to swallow before he could answer. “Yes, Marcus. Clear.”

Maya reached across the table and brushed his hair back, gentle, almost proud.

Marcus continued, still talking to both of them.

“Maya, you keep him in that underwear at home unless I say otherwise. He kneels when you tell him. He doesn’t sit on the furniture unless you allow it. If he gets restless in the cage, that’s his problem. He doesn’t get to make it ours.”

“I can do that,” Maya said softly. She was still looking at Ethan. “He’s already easier this morning. Quieter.”

“He should be.” A pause. “Show me.”

Maya turned the phone so the camera caught Ethan—sitting straight, ears red, the shape of the cage obvious under the thin fabric.

Marcus was silent for a second. Then: “He looks like he knows where he stands.”

Maya’s voice warmed. “He does. Don’t you, baby?”

Ethan nodded, then remembered he was supposed to use words. “Yes, Maya.”

“Tell him,” she murmured. “Tell Marcus you’re taking your place.”

Ethan stared at the phone. His voice came out low and rough. “I’m taking my place.”

Marcus made a small sound of approval. “Again. Properly.”

Ethan’s throat worked. “I’m taking my place, Marcus. I understand the key stays with you. Maya is in charge of me. You’re in charge of… this.”

Maya smiled like he’d given her a gift. She stroked his cheek with her thumb.

“That’s my good boy,” she whispered, still on the call. “See? He’s learning. A little shaky, a little embarrassed, but he said it. I love that.”

Marcus didn’t soften much. He didn’t need to. “Keep him that way. I want him thinking about last night when he walks. I want him thinking about the key when he tries to get comfortable. Next time I see him, he’s already on his knees. He thanks me for holding it. Out loud. No mumbling.”

“He will,” Maya said.

“Ethan.”

“Yes, Marcus.”

“You’re doing what you’re supposed to do. Don’t ruin it by hoping it goes back. It doesn’t.”

“Yes, Marcus.”

Maya leaned in and kissed Ethan’s temple while the line was still open. “I love you,” she said, quiet enough that it was for him, loud enough that Marcus heard it. “That’s why I’m letting him set this. You look right like this. Smaller. Mine. His when he wants you.”

Marcus ended the call a moment later.

The kitchen felt different. Maya stood, walked around the table, and pulled Ethan’s face against her stomach. Her fingers moved through his hair, slow and claiming.

“You heard him,” she said. “He’s in charge of us. I’m in charge of you. That’s the order now. You don’t have to figure anything else out. You just follow it.”

Ethan breathed against her. He didn’t argue.

She tipped his chin up so he had to look at her.

“Dishes. Then the living room floor. Hands on your thighs. If you need to adjust the cage, you ask me first. If you need to speak, you ask me first. That’s how we start the day he just gave us.”

“Yes, Maya.”

She kissed the top of his head.

“There’s my sweet boy,” she murmured. “Locked. Listening. Taking his place.”

Ethan stayed in the chair until she pointed at the sink. The key was gone. The rules hadn’t come from her this time. They had come from the man who now held both of them—and Maya looked happier for it.
