Kindergarten divided alphabetically, newer trend?

My kids public school kindergarten class is broken down alphabetically. Kids with the initials A-E for example are in teacher 1’s class while F-J are in teacher 2’s class.

Does this occur on a larger scale across the U.S. in the more recent years, maybe regional/state wide according to the educational laws where I reside?

I bring this up because growing up (in the 2000’s and 2010’s) I had classes with kids of all last names, not chronologically.

Newer trend? Are you seeing this in your public school system?
