17yo in Kentucky trying to get financially independent — what jobs should I look for?
I'm 17 and turn 18 in about 6 months. I'm trying to get a job now because my goal is to move out around the time I turn 18.
I don't have a car yet and only have my permit, so transportation is one of my biggest problems. I'm in the Louisville/Shelbyville, Kentucky area.
What I'm wondering is: what kind of jobs should I realistically be applying for at 17 that could eventually allow me to support myself?
I'm looking for something that:
- Hires 17-year-olds
- Ideally pays $15+/hour
- Has reasonably consistent hours
- Could potentially give me more hours once I'm 18
- Doesn't require a college degree
- Is accessible without a car
I'm actively applying, but I'm not sure whether I should focus on restaurants, retail, warehouses, customer service, grocery stores, etc.
If you were 17 and trying to become financially independent within 6–7 months, what would you do?
