Frequent strep in one year old

12–18 Months

Daughter started daycare at 10 months old in April. End of May, had a rash and decreased appetite. I ended up with a sore throat and tested positive for strep later that week. Had her tested and she was positive. End of July, she had an unexplained high fever for 5 days before breaking out in a full body scarlet fever strep rash - positive again. Mom and dad get it too. Tested her after we all finished antibiotics and she was negative. Over the weekend, she broke out in a rash and ended up with a fever later that day. Two days later fever is gone but rash persisted so we brought her in to be tested, and lo and behold she’s positive again (and now dad is too). 3 times she’s had strep in 4 months. Her doctor is flabbergasted because of how rare it is in her age group (11-15 months old each time she has gotten it).

Her daycare had one strep notification in early May, but nothing else since then except for her. Doctor said it would be rare for other kids in her age group to be carriers. I see them frequently cleaning toys at daycare too. We’re struggling with what to do - I can’t pull her out of daycare, switching daycare feels like a big change which could theoretically not make a difference. But I hate the thought of her getting this constantly (and considering we get it too, it is really a huge pain). We have an ENT referral but don’t think it’ll help much since they don’t remove tonsils at this age (and I don’t think I’d want to put her through that)

  1. has anyone else had recurrent strep in this age group?
  2. any ideas how to stop it? Will it get better when she moves daycare rooms?
