Questions about PS3

I might be buying me a PS3 someday, but I have questions.

1. Does the thick/fat model itself plays PS1 and PS2 games?

2. How can I put a mod on there that plays Japanese PS2 game discs? Which YT vid should I watch or would recommend sharing to me?
