Venting about leaving then returning to Birmingham

Daily Discussion Thread

I visited Birmingham after many years living elsewhere. The areas that white people now frequent look great overall. All other areas that are historically Black post segregation era have so many communities that were busy and thriving during the 90s that now look abandoned. I was driving around West End across from Arlington and noticed a huge apartment complex and doctor's office that were Black, well manicured during the 90s now overgrown, abandoned and blighted. Also many small corner gas stations, tire and mechanic shops in older buildings are now closed with nothing that replaced them. I remember Richard Arrington's aggressive beautification efforts with neighborhood themed light pole flags, lighting and lawn upgrades around city buildings and roadway medians, and neighborhood welcome signs, etc. during a time of gang violence and high crime nationwide. The entertainment upgrades don't mean much since those jobs are seasonal or extremely low paying and most residents likely don't see those places. It's so sad seeing this. Why doesn't the community demand more low hanging fruit upgrades now? Do people not care? I remember people calling it out and demanding more of this during city council meetings weekly when I lived in the city back during the 90s. Did Bham get more federal money for this? Truly sad.
