How was the Affordable Care Act supposed to work in its original form before it was heavily gutted in Congress?

I know it was/is quite different from Medicare for All since it was closer to universal private insurance, and though I sort of understand how it was supposed to work in its original form, I'm not completely sure of all the specifics. Thank you.
