The work of Steven Soderbergh transgresses genre and has been a lynchpin in defining modern cinema. Known for mastering both the intimate drama and the blockbuster epic, Soderbergh’s inventive, bold style of storytelling saw him win the Palme d’Or for his 1989 directorial debut *Sex, Lies, and Videotape*, win a Best Director Oscar for *Traffic* (2000), and sees him continue to push boundaries and break moulds today.

# Kafka (1991) / Mr. Kneff (2021) - Imprint Collection #637

***Worldwide 4K UHD and Blu-ray debuts!***

Soderbergh followed his acclaimed directorial debut, *Sex, Lies, and Videotape* (1989), with the surrealist mystery thriller biopic *Kafka* (1991). This subversive take on the life of author Franz Kafka blends reality and Kafka’s own fictional works together into a unique, bizarre world.

After a colleague is murdered, insurance worker Kafka becomes embroiled in an underground group attempting to thwart a secret organisation that controls the major events in society.

Starring Jeremy Irons as Kafka, and featuring performances from Theresa Russell, Joel Grey, Ian Holm, and Alec Guinness, the once box-office flop has since mutated into a cult classic.

In 2021, Soderbergh premiered his long-planned re-cut and re-imagined version of the film, titled *Mr. Kneff*, transforming the picture into a silent, sepia-tinted, shortened vision, accompanied by an energetic contemporary score. Appearing here **on disc for the first time worldwide**, *Mr. Kneff* is proof of Soderbergh’s enthusiasm for embracing the unexpected and revisiting doors previously closed.

Take a journey into *Kafka*’s absurd, dystopian, psychological labyrinth - a must-see gem for fans of *Brazil* (1985), *1984* (1984), and *They Live* (1988). **Both versions come to 4K UHD for the first time worldwide in astonishing new 4K restorations, and also make their global Blu-ray debuts!**
