According to an August 2026 report by *The Indian Express*, the government sent nearly **1.95 lakh blocking orders** to Instagram, Facebook and YouTube between March and July 2026.

That works out to roughly **1,275 orders every day, or one every 68 seconds**.

For comparison, RTI data reported by *The Indian Express* showed around **2,312 orders across 19 platforms during October 2024-October 2025**, averaging about 6 per day.

Instagram reportedly received nearly 1 lakh orders, Facebook around 80,000 and YouTube around 15,000. Importantly, these are **orders, not individual posts**. One order can cover hundreds of pieces of content or accounts.

The report also says Meta integrated its API with the government's Sahyog portal to comply with the required takedown timeline, potentially allowing flagged content to be removed without a separate human review by Meta.

This raises some questions that deserve straightforward answers:

**1. What explains the jump from roughly 6 blocking orders a day to around 1,275 a day?**

**2. How many of these 1.95 lakh orders were related to genuinely illegal content, and how many involved criticism, political speech, protests or ordinary public complaints?**

**3. How many orders were subsequently reviewed, rejected, withdrawn or found to have been issued incorrectly?**

**4. If one government order can cover hundreds of posts or accounts, shouldn't the government publish the number of individual pieces of content actually blocked?**

**5. If platforms can automatically remove content based on government notices, what independent safeguard prevents an incorrect government order from instantly becoming an incorrect takedown?**

**6. How can citizens effectively challenge a takedown if they aren't told which government authority requested it or why their specific post was targeted?**

**7. Should there be a publicly accessible transparency report showing the authority issuing each order, legal provision used, reason for removal, number of posts affected, and outcome of any appeal?**

This isn't an argument that illegal content should remain online. The question is about **transparency, due process and accountability when the state asks private platforms to remove speech at this scale.**

If the orders are overwhelmingly justified, publishing the underlying numbers and review outcomes should make that easier to demonstrate.

**What do you think is the appropriate level of transparency for government content-blocking orders?**
