How to work around dominant player?
Throwaway
I’ve been playing D&D with one group for three years, and it’s been mostly great! The other players are chill and have some very cool characters, the story is always moving on to something new, and our DM is a genuinely great guy—super flexible and a fantastic storyteller, but we have one player who I would describe as… dominant.
They joined about a year ago, and after a few sessions, they:
- Elected themselves group leader.
- Deemed the rest of us incapable of doing anything without their involvement.
- Controls the airtime (we play online) never allowing anybody else to participate unless it’s explicitly their turn in combat.
- Make any moment of RP about themselves, even if it means harming another PC.
What bothers me is that our DM doesn’t seem to mind... They’re competent at the game and engage with the story, but the rest of the party will go quiet for an hour+ sometimes while these two prattle back and forth, Oftentimes the only choice we're left with is a binary Yes or No cause the player has already exhausted all options.
I’m at the end of my rope, and it sucks because I enjoy the story, the world, the characters, and the people I play with. I hate to admit but my favorite sessions have been the ones without this player, when the rest of the party can step up, participate, and have moments to shine.
I’ve brought this up both subtly and not-so-subtly to my DM, to which I got the reply:
“You’ll have to work around it.”
I’ve coming to the conclusion that this may just be a “me” problem, and I’m probably gonna quit, but I needed to vent anyway.
Advice would be appreciated, of course:)
Thank you, and have a good day!
