Voice writing vs machine

I am a machine student currently (just started) and am very interested in it, and have even enjoyed it! Although I’ve enjoyed it thus far, one big factor I went machine over voice, is that I’ve seen that machine writers make way more money than voice, but I’m starting to wonder how true that is. I am located in Alabama, and plan to be a freelancer once certified. I know it will take longer to complete school for machine writing, but I would like to finish school asap because I’m a mom in my 30’s, but I went machine because I didn’t want to leave any money on the table. Do freelance voice writers actually make that much less? Anyone care to share their salary/give more insight so I can make a more educated choice? Thanks!!
