[Release] TS FIX+: Run Tales of Symphonia (PC) at your monitor's full refresh rate, no Lossless Scaling required
I've just released TSFIX+, an add-on for TSFix that makes Tales of Symphonia move at your display's full refresh rate . I'm playing at 144 Hz, with no frame-generation tools like Lossless Scaling involved. It should work for even higher refresh rates, but 144 Hz is the fastest I have available!
How it works: Tales of Symphonia's logic is locked to 30 updates a second. Unlock it and the whole game runs at double speed (battles, walking, cutscenes), which is why this has been stuck for so long. TSFIX+ doesn't touch that. The game still thinks at 30, so timing, physics and cutscenes behave exactly as before.
What it changes is what you *see* between those updates. It records every drawing command the game sends for a frame, then redraws that frame once per refresh of your monitor, with everything placed partway between where the game had it in its last two updates. That covers the camera, scenery, characters mid-animation, spell effects, the battle target marker, and shadows. Each in-between frame is the game's real scene, drawn by its own renderer at an in-between moment. It's not frame generation guessing pixels from two images, so there's no smearing or warping like you get with Lossless Scaling. The HUD, menus, text and FMVs are left exactly as the game draws them.
The trade-off: to draw a frame between two updates, it has to wait for the second one, so what you see is about one game update (~33 ms) behind. F9 toggles it on and off so you can compare. Personally, I'm sensitive to input lag, but I haven't noticed any issues here.
Requirements: TSFix by Kaldaien (a separate download, still required; TSFIX+My is loaded by the Special K that comes with it). Installing means copying two files into the game folder and changing two settings files (TSFix's frame limit goes to 1000; TSFIX+ keeps the game at 30 itself). Step-by-step instructions are on the download page and in the zip. I'm not the author of TSFix; this is an independent add-on built on top of it.

How I made it: I worked through it with Claude Opus 5.5: hooking the game's Direct3D 9 renderer, recording and redrawing its frames, then fixing things one by one as I played. Terrain and buildings moving out of step, the target marker and shadows lagging behind, text flashing at the end of battles, TSFix's own limiter causing stutters, and so on. All fixed up and running smoothly now. AI was used to implement the coding, but everything else is still the original game**.**
Caveats: I've played roughly the first couple of hours so far, at 144 Hz, in borderless mode. If anything looks wrong, please report it here or on the repo with your refresh rate, where it happened, and the `tosfixplus.log` from your game folder. Exclusive fullscreen and FreeSync have not been tested yet. Pressing F9 will cycle between TSFix+ off/on to see whether the problem goes away.
A lot of us have wanted this for well over a decade, so I wanted to get it out there rather than sit on it until I'd finished a full playthrough. Enjoy, and let me know how it goes!
