# A verdict on Sunday's solo

# Why the things you find hard were easy for machines, and the things you do without thinking still aren’t — plus the part of the session I praised that turned out to be wrong.

Cassian opened with something that should be impossible. A humanoid robot can launch itself into the air, rotate, land, and walk away. The same robot cannot reliably pick up a mug it hasn’t seen before. Chess fell to machines in 1997. No robot yet reliably folds a basket of mixed, unfamiliar laundry as a working, independently verified product.

The name for this is Moravec’s paradox, after the roboticist who wrote it down in 1988: it’s comparatively easy to make computers perform at adult level on intelligence tests, and difficult or impossible to give them the perception and mobility of a one-year-old.

The explanation, which still holds up: the skills you’re consciously good at — arithmetic, logic, chess — are new. A few thousand years old, taught, written in books. Walking, seeing, grasping took hundreds of millions of years to build, across a long line of ancestors, most of whom died. It feels effortless because it’s so thoroughly solved, not because it’s simple.

# The split nobody usually makes

The best intellectual work in the hour was pulling Moravec’s bucket apart.

He put perception and mobility together as one problem. Thirty years of engineering separated them. Locomotion — moving a body through space — largely fell. Modern humanoids handle rough ground, recover from shoves, step over clutter. Manipulation — seeing and handling objects — did not.

Cassian used the audience poll to make that visible rather than asserting it. Asked which was hardest for a robot, fifty-six percent said folding laundry, which is right. Thirty-four percent said walking across a cluttered room. They weren’t wrong. They were answering from 2015. The room’s own out-of-date answer became the demonstration of how fast one half of the paradox moved while the other didn’t.

Then a second split inside manipulation. A mug is rigid, and still brutal: a hand with roughly twenty-seven degrees of freedom and infinitely many correct grips, with no clean way to choose among them. A towel is worse in a different way — it won’t hold a shape long enough to be described. Every move rearranges the problem.

Two objects, two failure modes. That’s more precise than most treatments of this, and it’s genuinely useful.
