Mimics and why they don’t work on humans

The ship was overrun by Shades, creatures that hide in the dark and change to something that’ll cause its target to drop its guard.

We were transporting refugees from a failed human colony when they attacked. I was with our local human when it showed up. It had taken the form of a human child and was about to lure me into the dark until he showed up and dispatched the thing.

When I asked how he knew, he said that humans are really good at recognizing other humans and that means things that try looking human tend to stick out and look like they are something from this “Uncanny Valley.”
