The thing about WILMA boarding...

Discussion

So, United (and other airlines) board Window/Middle/Aisle for the standard cattle class passengers. Which is practical and all but the thing is, with the current carry on challenges, that means that aisle seats are always getting screwed over on getting their bag checked and needing to spend extra time at their destination waiting for baggage to be unloaded.

I wonder if there is a fairer way of handling this. My proposal: at check-in, first come first served carry-on tags are assigned. If you get one, you print it at a kiosk upon arrival. After they assign the max number they can fit on the plane (reserving for first class and bulkhead passengers), everyone else is informed that they will have to check their carry-on. Could save them some hassles by allowing the choice of checking at the ticket counter or at the gate. No carry-on tag, no carry-on can be brought onto the plane. Probably creates too much hassle for the gate agents (watching for people trying to sneak on untagged bags), but would definitely simplify boarding.
