Bales of hay dropping on 64E

I witnessed a trailer drop 3 bales of hay before pulling to the shoulder. I'm not sure what happened with the first one I saw drop, but the next two dropped together and I'm pretty sure someone crashed into them because I heard a crash behind me (my lane was unaffected and traffic moved past the bales).

Does anyone know more about that situation?
