My Coworker(23F) and I(26M) have been locked into a cold war standoff. What is the reason?
Do not know if this is advice needed or should just be a question. But here we go.
I started work in January and joined as part of a new graduate rotational program. As everyone knows, the point of the program is to ensure that we find fulltime roles by the end of our 2 years. I consider myself a very dedicated and hard worker no matter the role so I believe whichever job resonates with me the most I will take that. This meant that one of my main goals in the program was to make friends.
Our program folk had a workshop to attend in Janaury and thats when I saw many other new graduates to network with. I would see my coworker crush(23M mentioned in title) that day but she wasn't my crush at that point. Infact she wasn't even the person I was interested in talking to at that time. But I did see that she was part of a group that gets lunch together. I decided I wanted to try becoming a part of the group the next time I see them and introduce myself to all of them.
Before I say more, I do want to mention, that every month when this program team meats up she does sit next to this tall guy after the core day meetings are done. They are usually sitting and chatting til like 6pm or something and then typically leave together.
That same week actually, I saw her a second time and just decided to go with her group for lunch. It was nice, I introduced myself, we talked about shows and it was great. However, to my coworker crush, I asked her if she saw any Kdramas because I thought she was Korean(I thought she was Chinese, my bad!). She said had until her 3rd year of university but then stopped. Then I asked if she saw the famous Korean dating show Singles Inferno. That she said she watched until the end of the 3rd season. That is what we started chatting about. Like all the couples who should've/shouldn't have ended up together, the red flags that people gave off etc. Turns out that we had a lot of the same feelings about these people and similar reasoning for those feelings. I told her I was on the 5th season and its not too bad. Either way, time was up and I had to leave for a meeting. But when I left I was thinking to myself "Did I seriously just talk to a new person I just met about a dating show? She must have thought so weirdly because of that!".
The weekend goes by and on Monday morning, this girl pings me first thing saying she binged Singles Inferno and was actually caught up to the latest episodes in the season I was watching. Meaning she even watched more than me. She told me what she had to say about every person(This was in late-January btw). That is what got our conversations started. Over the days(into February), we would chat about this, then myself wanting to take a vacation to China and Taiwan and asking for tips. This is when she became my crush. Then me showcasing the little bit of Mandarin I know to her which she told me I spoke well. She asked out for lunch which I unfortunately had to turn down, since I was not in-office that day and even if I had left at that very moment it wouldn't been aftet the lunch hour. She said it was all good though.
Before I continue further, I wanted to mention that apart from letting new graduate rotate onto different teams, they managers of the program itself has committees for us to be a part of to help us improve our leadership skills. Myself and my coworker crush are assigned to the same committee by coincidence! It's an event-planning committee.
In late-February, there was a treat run that our committee had to do for people celebrating their birthdays in that month. It was agreed we would meet at 11:30 on the 4th floor of the building before leaving to the store and my crush said she was being pulled into a 11:30 call last minute. I said its fine and waited for anyone else on the committee to show up. Noone else showed up. Hence, I decided to go alone then and at 11:40 my crush messaged the committee chat to let us know the meeting finished early and she was on 4th and asked where everyone is. I said I left and was on the path to the store. My crush asked "should I join you or stay here?". I said "its upto you". She says "thanks for taking one for the team". It then takes me an hour to find the store since my mental map of the area was fried and its underground level so Google maps wasn't helping either. When I come back to the office with the treats and just sit down at the table with the lunch I just got, my crush gives md a side eye and doesnt talk to me. In the program meeting, she mentions to me how I forgot to bring plates, candles, a lighter and a knife. I was a little tired so I just gently slapped my lap and was like "dammit! I knew I forgot something". She laughed and went away. But after that, incident we never messaged each other on teams for a while.
In March meetings she is stoic and quiet. I suggest after one meeting that if she is free we could meet up for lunch and told her to always feel free to reach out. She said she has lunch with her team nowadays but we are in-office the same days so we could always still meet(which confused me). At at the of the month, our events planning committee organizes an afterwork gathering at the rec room. At the rec room, my crush is laughing hysterically and records me playing a vr simulator along with my friend since Im punching the air or cat pawing from an observer's perspective while my friend thinks its a roller coaster and doesnt actually play the game. I learn this was happening from my other friend who was waiting his turn for this game. He told me he isnt sure if its a bad thing but he doesnt like how I didnt know I was being recorded. Shortly after, her best friend in the program "her wingwoman friend" invites the me to spend time with herself, my crush and her group if friends. However, I say no because I believes the video was taken out of malice and to tease me and make a joke of him. I believed if I went with them, they would have made an example of me and would have just wanted to endlessly mock me. When her wingwoman was asking me this my crush was standing right behind her.
The next week, which is April, out of the fear that they will make an example of me and were gossiping about me from the rec room event, I decide to apologize to my crush by going to her floor. I say I'm sorry for any tension between the two of us and I'm sorry if there is anything I may have done that may have disturbed her. She downplays everything. She says its nothing like that and so I assume everything is fine.
After that she acts cold towards me. In the May team meeting, I ask her if she would like to deliver the monthly committee update to the team since I do it every month. She has no reaction and is typing on her laptop. Then her friend(who has a gf) walks over and tells me "you should be facing the front of the room not here". I felt so awkward and was like "what jsut happened?". I turned red and looked aroudn the room if anyone else was watching this. For the rest of the day the we both are passing by each other in the hallway but never say hi to each other.
I find out at this time she does not have a boyfriend because she was talking about traveling by herself to Japan as a solo traveler to her friends.
Then in June, when myself and my crush are placed at the same table for alumni networking workshop, she gives a judgy smile each time I ask the alumni questions. Our table ends up winning the end of workshop game though since both my answers and my crush's answers contributed for most of our teams points.
In July, a volunteering event is scheduled where everyone must sort food or toys. I decide not to wear formal/office clothes so I wear a t-shirt that ends up looking like a muscle shirt, jeans and not shave my beard. In the lobby that everyone is waiting for ubers, the my crush sees me and for the first time in months she gives a semi circle wave and says "hey" to me. I smile and say "hey" back. At the event venue. I'm sitting with my friends at a table in the back and she is sitting at a table in the middle. To look at the me, she has to actually turn her body around to see me, since her table is directly in frotn of mine. Mind you this was not mandatory seating btw. I catch my crush looking at me/checking me out atleast 10 times while I'm just chatting and laughing with my friends. Then when I'm talking to the friend of my crush who told me to face the front in May about the World Cup, it turns out he is a nice guy we had a good conversation. However, when my crush sees her friend and the me having the convo, she stops, looks at me, then her friend, then looks at me again, then leaves. Shortly after, we need to tie our aprons. All the guys are helping each other out, all the girls are helping each other out, but my crush has no one to help her. I'm getting my apron tied by a friend, but my crush somehow ends up in front of me and is just quietly staring at me while she is trying to tie her apron herself. Almost like as if she is implying she would like me to tie it. But I don't budge thinking its a trap to frame me. I don't even ask because I'm afraid she will use it to her advantage. She eventually is able to tie her apron herself. After that, she sits in the exact same seat where I was sitting in as soon as I removed my bag from there to sit with the other guys. Like just 2 seconds after.
I tell my friends(both girls and guys) everything that happened and they told me its because I had a muscle build that showed a pattern interruption compared to the usual times my crush sees me in work/formal clothes. There a photo of all the volunteers at this event which they used as proof for this, and to be fair, I did look fit.
After that, in August, I decide to just say a "hey" while waking by her. My crush doesnt say anything back. Infact, she talks to everyone in the room except me. Alright she is avoiding me I thought. During the meeting I am talking to the my crush's girlfriends about their work and they ask me about mine and such. I also offer to help the manager bring the lunch sandwiches to the floor. What was supposed to be a 5 person effort ends up being a 2 person effort as I end up up carrying 3 boxes himself in one big box. The manager told me the dietary restriction specifically on each box since the labels weren' t there, so I am one of the only 2 guys apart from my manager(who leaves anyway) who knows what dietary restrictions are on the boxes(veggie, chicken, beef). While waiting in line to get my food, I am talking to another girl about her job and my crush approaches her while she is clearly still talking to me and asks her "which one is veggie, which one is chicken, which one is beef?" Even though I am the one who carried the boxes and was standing right next to the person she was asking. My crush clearly knew I knew. It's like not only was she avoiding me by not saying "hey" back earlier, but trying to actively show that she is avoiding me without making eye contact once. Like there were so many people in the room she could've been talking to who not doing anything, were her friends and even in front of us in the line. Why come specifically to where I am and interrupt the conversation Im having? Either way, the wingwoman friend of my crush talks me as well just to find out about my work and such, that goes well. I'm is chatting about Al with other guys and come across as one of the smarter people in the conversation while some of my crush's friends are around. I dont even know if my crush was in the room at that point.
In early September, it was the first time in a while she unmuted her mic on a committee call to ask clarification from me on an event that is being planned. I thought, "well atleasr she in talking about something". On Sept 25th(Last Friday), there was a Python workshop where I dressed up very premium in a Black Emporio Armani polo, kaki pants, green Giorgio Armani suit, kept my beard, and wore whiskey reserve perfume. I was the first person at the workshop and when my crush arrived at the workshop, she sat at a row away from me(behind one row parallel to my right) but she could see me in a diagonal way. To get breakfast I had to walk past her row, so as a normal person would, I said "hey" while I passed by her row and the person beside her said "hey" but my crush just looked down and nodded. When getting breakfast I was being asked questions by the people in front of me, but my focus stumbled as I noticed my crush coming into the breakfast line right after me. I didnt think too much about her coming to the line right after me. However, I did stumble my words to the people who were in front of me. For the rest of the workshop, myself and another girl coworker next to me, helped each other during the workshop, but I mainly helped her and would pivot my laptop to show her the code and such. Whether the my crush noticed this or not is to be known. People left the workshop at different times. My crush's tall friend left the workshop, then I left half an hour after him, then she left the workshop after me I guess. So, this is all the information I can give you.
What is the reason for all this? Why might she be acting this way?
