My husbands promotion is the biggest inconvenience to my career

Advice Needed

I (26F) am in school to become a middle/high school math teacher and am currently in my student teaching and will graduate in December. I’ve been working at a high school as a math interventionist and this school year is my second year.

My job has made me learn that I absolutely love teaching and helping students make an intimidating subject less daunting. The admin staff and my coworkers have always been supportive of me as both a coworker and a student working towards my degree. My school district is amazing and I feel so lucky because I know a good supportive school district is very difficult to find. On top of all that, I love every single student that I have encountered and my students who have “graduated” from my services always make sure to find me to update me on their lives.

My husband (31M) is a warehouse manager and he found out 5 months ago that the warehouse where he works is getting shut down and is moving to a different state 6 hours away from where we live. He was offered a promotion that gave him a major salary increase as well as a $20,000 bonus for the move, the first 6 months rent paid for by the company, and quarterly bonuses throughout the year. When he was offered the job, I had already signed a contract with my school and I needed to stay for another year before I could move and his company gave him an extra $10k to his bonus to cover a sizable portion of the rent while I am still here. His company has offered jobs in different cities in the past but never to this extent. He would always turn them down because he didn’t want to move and he wanted to make sure I finished school.

The job offer is a once in a lifetime opportunity for him because he truly worked his way up in the warehouse. He wouldn’t be able to find a job where we are at with the same salary that he is getting now with the experience that he has. I know and he knows that this offer is the best option for us as a family so he accepted it.

I hate that I have to leave this school that I absolutely love. As a teacher, finding a good school that fits you and your career goals is like finding a 4 leaf clover. I do not want to leave. If my school was unsupportive or just flat out awful, this decision would be easy. I have tried calculating the cost to stay another year and financially I wouldn’t be able to pay full rent on my own on top of the bills I already have. When I think about the move I just burst into tears and according to my therapist, I’ve already started grieving. What’s worse is that they were going to offer me a geometry class next year which is my favorite type of math to teach.

I’ve talked to my husband about this and he has always been supportive but I think my constant negativity about the move made him snap because he already felt so bad about accepting the job offer because he knew that I absolutely love my job. I have no one to talk to about this and honestly I needed to get this out somewhere. Any advice on how to cope with this would be nice but honestly I might have to accept the fact that I will have to let this amazing school go in 8 months. If you made it this far, thank you.

TLDR: My husband and I had to choose whose job matters more and we chose the one that made sense financially and now I’m sad.
