Why did a work dispute cause me to now have an extreme fear of anger, confrontation, and raised voices.
I (16f) have always been scared of confrontation, people being angry/raising their voices/yelling at me, and criticism/rejection. I really work hard to get along and be friends with everyone. Recently I have become extremely sensitive to perceiving that people are upset with me. I realized today that this fear has become extreme when an administrator at my school spoke harshly to me causing me to start crying (I have never been the type to publicly cry). My large reactions started after an experience at work that upset me. I had my first job over the summer, but I had been in the community of this job for a while. I stated that I missed an old coworker/my mentor infront of B (27f) who had old coworkers job. They then repeated that to one of the other individuals, K (45f) with old coworker’s job, and that person confronted me aggressively saying I made them cry. additionally they contacted my old coworker/mentor to explain the situation to which they said they were disappointed in me. I was upset because I did not want to hurt anyone’s feelings. I went to my boss (27m) to explain the situation to which they told me that these coworkers had spread rumors (specifically that I was ‘bullying‘ them) to the entirety of upper level management. They talked to someone who works in my school community (who also works at this job) to try and get me kicked off my sports team (which did not work). they were both forced to apologize to me for screaming at me and lying about me but the damage was done. when my boss tried to clear my name there was such a large spread amount of people who had heard the lies about me it was not possible to stop the rumor mill. I’m not going to quit my job bc it’s a lot of fun and I have some good alliances at this job. but after this dispute I find that I cannot be well emotionally regulated when people are upset with me. I don’t know how to bring my nervous system back to how it was before pls help.
