AITA for telling my parents I wasn't asking for their permission?
This blew up so bad and now my mom won't talk to me.[24F]
I live on my own, I moved out 2 years ago, I pay my own rent, bills, everything. But my parents still act like I'm 16.
I got a small tattoo last month on my forearm, it's like flowers for my grandma who passed. I like it. I told my parents about it after I got it in our family group chat, just like hey guys I got this tattoo for grandma.
My mom immediately called me freaking out saying how could you do that without asking us, you know we don't like tattoos, your dad is so disappointed. My dad texted saying I'm being disrespectful and that I should have asked for their opinion first.
I told them I'm 24, I live alone, I pay for everything myself, I wasn't asking for permission I was just telling you guys because I wanted to share something meaningful to me.
My mom said that doesn't matter, as long as I'm their daughter I should respect them and ask before I do things like that to my body. She said it's about respect.
I said no, respect doesn't mean I need permission to do what I want with my own body. I'm an adult. I said I'm not going to ask for permission to live my life.
Now my mom is saying I'm ungrateful and have an attitude and that I think I'm too good for them. My dad hasn't replied to any of my texts since. My little brother says I was too harsh and should have just said sorry to keep the peace.
My boyfriend says I did nothing wrong and that they are being controlling.[26M]
I feel kind of guilty because I didn't mean to be rude, but I'm also so tired of them treating me like a kid. I'm 24 and I have a full time job.
AITAH for telling them I wasn't asking for their permission?
