Canadian experience in van for the family

My family and I (kids 10 and 7) are heading to Van in January for skiing from Australia. We have about 4 days after whistler to explore. I used to live in Van 20 years ago so am familiar with the standard activities so I'm keen to stay somewhere/ do something with them kids that's is truly Canadian. Open to staying on Vancouver island too. Id love to do something in nature or a indigenous cultural experience. Ty
