TL;DR:On Monday, Instinct - a free personal AI agent with no app that you literally just text - raised a $1B Series C at a $10B valuation from Sequoia, Benchmark and Coatue.

**The company has 14 employees and a 23-year-old CEO, which works out to \~$714M of valuation per employee.**

The usage stats behind the hype (40% of users handing over a credit card within three weeks for agents to make purchases, 10-11% growth per day) are all founder-reported, and Meta's Muse has \~34x the downloads. And I still think this is the most important consumer AI story of the year. Receipts below.

[If you want to try it here is my invite code.](https://app.instinct.com/invite?t=auvk7h5anqrvpe4r3c4frl2zc4&preview=imessage)

I use Instinct every day, I write about them, and 340 people have joined through my personal invite link. I'm one of the \~100k invite-only users, and I've spent the past month stress-testing 13 personal agents side by side for my Agent Wars series. I am not a neutral observer. I'm an operator with receipts. Judge accordingly.

The funding deal (this part is verified press)

On Sept 28, Business Wire ran a 200-word release: $1B at $10B post-money, from Sequoia, Benchmark and Coatue. Reuters, Bloomberg and TechCrunch confirmed it independently. No lead investor named. No user metrics, no revenue, no use of proceeds. Founder Noah Shinn declined interviews. The one quote: "We're building Instinct to be the best personal agent that can handle the deeply personal nuances of everyday life... we're just getting started."

The NYT's Andrew Ross Sorkin broke the detail that broke everyone's brain: 14 employees.

The math that doesn't look real but it is....

\- \~$714M of valuation per employee.\*\* For comparison, one commentator's math puts Anthropic at \~$249M per head and OpenAI at \~$108M.

\- Operating entity registered April 2026. Decacorn by Sept 28. Call it 180 days.

\- Four priced rounds in \~5 months: \~$50M seed -> $500M+ Series A -> $2.5B Series B -> $10B Series C. Step-ups of 10x, 5x and 4x.

\- The Series B was announced the same day the product left friends-and-family testing. The Series C landed 33 days later.

\- Seed investors are up roughly 200x on paper. In five months. A seed-fund LP at Financial Samurai wrote he'd "never seen this pace in 20 years" of venture investing.

\- Total raised: \~$1.35B. 74% of it arrived in a single round.

This is the part where WarGames comes to mind: the only winning move for the big funds was to get in. Shall we play a game? Sequoia, Benchmark, Kleiner Perkins, Index, Coatue, Conviction and Greenoaks all said yes. That is arguably the most stacked cap table in consumer AI history.

What the product actually is (for people who haven't used it)

No app. No new interface. You text it on iMessage or WhatsApp, or call it, like a person. It has persistent memory, it holds your logins and cards in a vault (only with your approval), and it uses a phone and a computer the way you do: it books, cancels, negotiates, researches, and coordinates with other people's agents.

The entire [instinct.com](http://instinct.com) website is three paragraphs and a "text to get started" link. That's it. That's the $10B website.

Why users are obsessed (user-reported receipts)

\- Sheel Mohnot (a VC at Better Tomorrow Ventures) exchanged 677 messages with his agent in five days. It negotiated his Comcast bill from $100 to $60, found an in-network podiatrist and filled out the intake forms, booked a DMV appointment, and negotiated wedding merchandise with vendors in India over WhatsApp while he slept.

\- One user's agent wanted IMAX tickets, so it waited until 3:09 AM and sniped a seat that opened from a cancellation.

\- Simon Taylor (Fintech Brainfood) texted "move it back 90 minutes" and it rebooked his pub reservation with zero restated context: "I didn't restate any of that. It just handled it, the way a good assistant would."

\- A salon in Copenhagen got a booking email from someone's agent and called the exchange "very, very human."

From my own month of testing: it caught flight changes before the airline did, it watches the things I forget to watch, and it is the only one of the 13 agents I've tested that feels like it works for me instead of near me. Sample size: one very demanding CMO. Your mileage may vary.

The $10 Billion VC thesis, translated to English

1. Trust is the moat. Shinn's self-reported stats: 40% of users share a credit card within three weeks for purchases, 37% store a password, and users who share anything sensitive show 80% retention. If true, that's the line between a chatbot (attention) and an agent (delegation). Nothing else in consumer AI has that curve.

2. Zero-marketing growth. Founder-reported 10-11% per day, from a launch to \~200 friends and family with five invites each. Roughly 10% of users invite someone every single day. No that is product market fit!

3. A take-rate business hiding inside a free product. Shinn claims $1B+ annualized transaction volume, about half of it travel, and says buyers using one-time cards average $1,300+/month. He wants it free forever, no ads, monetized by a merchant take rate somewhere between card-network (\~2.5%) and App Store (30%) levels. Bloomberg Intelligence sizes the routable booking/delivery/rides market at $1T.

4. Capital = compute = survival. Compute demand is doubling weekly, short-notice GPUs cost 3-4x, and the founder spends \~40% of his time buying compute. The billion is a capacity purchase, not a marketing budget.

5. The layer bet. Whoever owns the personal agent owns the traveler, the shopper and the subscriber relationship. The trip starts in a text thread, not an Expedia search box. OTAs, marketplaces, maybe even app stores get disintermediated.

6. FOMO on the category winner. Meta, Google, OpenAI and xAI all shipped competitors within weeks of launch. That validated the category and made the independent with the best word-of-mouth more valuable, not less.

The catch. Yes, there's a catch.

\- Everything impressive about usage is founder-reported. There is no verified user count (the \~100k figure is The Information's reporting, not the company's) and no revenue.

\- Liability is capped at $100. Read that again: an agent authorized to spend your money carries a $100 liability cap.

\- Multiple credible users report it acting beyond the ask: an email sent without checking first, a table booked with a $200 cancellation fee when only availability was requested, a password changed unasked.

\- Meta's Muse hit 3.4M downloads in the US and Canada by late September. Instinct: \~100k, invite-only. Meta's market cap is 191x Instinct's valuation. Meta's AI chief publicly calls it "Insect." Shinn replied with a smiley, which is either elite composure or a 23-year-old who knows something.

\- The original terms of service asked for a "perpetual and irrevocable" license to your stuff. It was revised after launch-day coverage, but it tells you how fast this company moves and where the corners are.

\- Users report lag and "high demand" messages, and one podcast host publicly switched to Muse this week over degraded cart checkouts. The capacity-strain thesis cuts both ways.

The bears are right that the numbers are unverified. They're wrong about what matters.

Distribution can be bought. Meta proved that in a weekend with Muse. Trust cannot be bought. Nobody hands Meta their credit card. 40% of Instinct's users handed theirs over within three weeks (founder-reported, yes - but I've watched the behavior in my own circle: 340 people took my invite, and the first thing most of them asked was some version of "wait, it can just book it for me?").

The question isn't whether Instinct is "worth" $10B today. On any spreadsheet, it obviously isn't. The question is whether the personal-agent layer is the next platform shift, and whether one independent company can hold it against four trillion-dollar giants. The funds didn't buy 14 employees. They bought the only team that has made ordinary consumers trust an agent with real access, plus the option that reliability beats distribution in the Agent Wars.

My money is where my mouth is - literally, my credit card is in its vault - and it's on the kid who wrote the paper on agents that learn from their own mistakes.

The doomer crowd will say 14 people can't be trusted with this much power. I'd remind them that the Empire had thousands of employees and the Rebellion had about 14. I've seen this movie. It ends with a trench run.

Instinct AI's personal assistant agent just got $1 Billion in funding. This is either the future of the Internet & AI or the top of the bubble. I ran the actual numbers. Here is why people love this personal AI agent with no app that you literally just text to do your life admin
